Rayhan Ahmed, Mymensingh Bureau Chief: A potentially devastating fire that broke out at Netrokona’s historic Boro Bazar on Saturday night, August 8, was brought under control within an hour, as firefighters, led from the front by Mymensingh Fire Service and Civil Defence Assistant Director Purna Chandra Mutsuddi, battled the blaze under extremely difficult conditions.

The fire erupted at around 9:40pm in the densely packed commercial area, where shops, warehouses and multi-storey buildings stand close to one another. Within minutes, flames and thick black smoke engulfed the area, triggering panic among traders, residents and shoppers.

The narrow lanes and congested layout of the market made access extremely difficult. A fire spreading through the tightly packed buildings could have caused enormous damage to property and potentially put thousands of lives at risk.

Upon receiving the news, Assistant Director Purna Chandra Mutsuddi rushed to the scene and took charge of the firefighting operation.

His immediate assessment of the situation helped firefighters identify the most effective points from which to attack the flames, locate available water sources and prevent the fire from spreading further into surrounding buildings.

Instead of remaining at a safe distance and directing the operation, Mutsuddi reportedly entered one of the most dangerous sections of the affected area himself.

The fire had spread through a narrow passage beside a six-storey building. The passage was filled with intense heat and heavy smoke, while damaged sheets of tin and other debris created additional hazards.

Amid those conditions, Mutsuddi worked alongside the firefighters, helping them handle the hoses and encouraging them to continue the operation despite the risks.

For the firefighters working in the heart of the blaze, his presence provided an important boost to morale.

The coordinated operation continued throughout the night. Firefighters fought to contain the flames and prevent them from reaching neighbouring shops, warehouses and buildings.

By approximately 10:40pm, just one hour after the fire was first reported, the blaze had been brought under control.

The rapid containment prevented what could have become a much larger disaster in one of Netrokona’s busiest commercial centres.

Reflecting on the operation, Mutsuddi said he did not want to take personal credit for the achievement. He stressed instead the importance of reaching the scene quickly, using modern equipment and confronting the danger directly.

According to him, a delay in reaching the market or failure to act decisively could have produced a very different outcome, with far greater loss of property and potentially serious casualties.

The officer also remained attentive to the safety of his own team during the operation.

Several firefighters reportedly suffered minor injuries or became unwell after inhaling smoke while battling the flames and removing heavy sheets of tin and debris.

Mutsuddi personally supervised their treatment and arranged for them to be taken to hospital without delay through ambulances and other available transport.

His actions highlighted another important aspect of emergency leadership: protecting the people who themselves are risking their lives to protect others.

By the following morning, the scene at Boro Bazar had changed dramatically. Burnt wood, damaged tin and the lingering smell of smoke stood as reminders of the previous night`s ordeal.

For local traders, however, the fact that the fire had been contained before it engulfed a larger part of the market was a major relief.

The incident has once again highlighted the importance of fire safety in Bangladesh`s densely populated commercial areas.

Markets such as Boro Bazar often contain large quantities of combustible materials, while narrow roads, crowded buildings, electrical hazards and limited access can make firefighting extremely challenging.

Regular inspection of electrical systems, improved firefighting infrastructure, accessible roads for emergency vehicles, adequate water sources and greater public awareness are therefore essential.

The courage displayed by Assistant Director Purna Chandra Mutsuddi and the firefighters at Boro Bazar offers a powerful reminder that effective leadership, rapid response and teamwork can make the difference between a contained emergency and a full-scale catastrophe.

For the traders and residents of Netrokona, the night of August 8 will be remembered not only for the frightening flames, but also for the firefighters who stood between those flames and a far greater disaster.
