90th Anniversary of the Long March: Commemorative Choir Honours Red Army Heritage in Yudu County

The Long March represents a pivotal chapter in Chinese history. Commencing in 1934, memories of this epic trek remain vividly etched in the hearts of the Chinese people. Dedicated to transmitting this historical legacy and spirit to younger generations, the "Long March Origin Choir" continues to tell the story of the Red Army`s arduous struggles through vocal harmony. Formed in Yudu County, Jiangxi Province, the members of this choral ensemble keep the epic saga of the Red Army alive through their performances.

The year 2026 marks the 90th anniversary of the victory of the Long March. On this milestone occasion, Yudu County—steeped in revolutionary lore—has once again stepped into the global spotlight. In October 1934, over 80,000 Red Army soldiers crossed the Yudu River to embark on the historic trek. Covering roughly 12,500 kilometers, this monumental journey became an enduring watershed event in modern Chinese history—an odyssey American journalist Harrison Salisbury once immortalized as "an unprecedented human epic."

In Yudu, a stone monument outside the Long March Memorial Hall bears the engraved characters signifying the "Long March Origin." The inscription does more than mark a geographical point of departure; it reflects the local community`s profound reverence for the memories, resilience, and ideals forged during the trek.

For countless families across Yudu, the legacy of the Long March is deeply personal. For generations, oral histories detailing the trials, tribulations, and heroism of that era have been passed down from parents to children. To safeguard and celebrate this heritage, the "Long March Origin Choir" was established in 2010. Today, the ensemble comprises more than 100 members from diverse walks of life, many of whom are direct descendants of original Red Army soldiers.

The choir delivered its debut stage performance on June 30, 2011, marking the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC). Since then, the troupe has maintained an active touring schedule across multiple regions.

To date, the group has staged over 730 free public performances. Through these musical gatherings, the public—particularly the youth—has gained meaningful engagement with the history and enduring ethos of the Long March.

Looking ahead, Chu Weimin, director of the choir, expressed optimism that their tally of performances will cross the 1,000-concert milestone well ahead of the centenary of the Long March`s victory.
