Arrival of foreign ships in Mongla port increasing: imports & exports gaining momentum

Aziz Moral, Mongla: Mongla, the country`s second seaport, is heading towards gradual improvement as a result of various groundbreaking steps taken by the present government and port authorities. In this continuum of development last Sunday (October 25) all the jetties at Mongla port were full of foreign ships which is a rare event in the history of the port.

According to port authorities, increasing the navigability of jetties and channels and increasing the capacity of Mongla port at the same time 5 ships were berthed for unloading cargo. MV Daisy with Liberian ship cargo, MV Kotaria with Singapore ship container, MV Kotaharmat with Singapore ship container, MV Honor with Panamanian ship cargo, MV Malaya with car imported from Malaysia. Among the ships stationed at Mongla port are 2 ships of 7 meter draft. A total of 11 ships are stationed at Mongla port, including 5 at the jetty.

If you want to know Mongla Port Chairman Rear Admiral M. Shahjahan said the rapid implementation of the projects undertaken for the development of the port has resulted in an increase in operational activities. The number of ships arriving at the port is increasing rapidly. Especially in car import, the importance of Mongla port has increased several times. With the launch of the PadmaBridge in Mawa, MonglaPort will be the top importer and exporter. He further said that the far-reaching steps taken by Hon`ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for the development of MonglaPort have made the activities of the port more dynamic.

It is learned that a total of 60 ships have arrived at Mongla port till October 26 this month. Five of them are container ships. Last September, 83 ships arrived at Mongla port. Deputy Secretary of the Port Makruzzaman Munshi said that due to the special vision and timely decision of Hon`ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to develop and increase the capacity of MonglaPort, for the first time in the history of the port, all the jetties of MonglaPort are full of foreign ships. The port official hopes that the number of ships arriving at the port will reach one thousand in 2021.
