4 drown in Jamalpur floodwater

Four individuals drowned while bathing in floodwater at Melandah upazila in Jamalpur district on Sunday afternoon.

The incident took place around 5pm at South Baluchar area under Shyampur union of the upazila.

The deceased were identified as Disha Akter, 17, Sadia, 10, Khadiza, 10, and Rokshana, 25, residents of the aforesaid area.


According to locals, Rokshana, along with four others, went to bathe in the floodwater near their house in the afternoon. At that time, a strong wave washed the group away, causing them to drown.


Seeing them being drowned, a teenage girl, who was near to the spot, screamed for help. In response, locals rushed there and found four them floating.

However, among them one Maria, 12, managed to swim ashore during the incident.

Melandah Police Station officer-in-charge Raju Ahmed confirmed the incidents.
