All universities, medical colleges shut until further notice
  Date : 08-09-2024

The University Grants Commission (UGC) on Tuesday declared that apublic and private universities and medical colleges will remain closed until further notice.

The UGC made the announcement in a statement issued on Tuesday night (16 July) amid violent clashes between quota protesters and police, BCL and Jubo League.

The decision has been taken considering the safety of the students, UGC said in the handout.

Meanwhile, all institutions under the National University will also remain closed for the same reason.

The government also shut schools and colleges and postponed Thursday’s HSC exam after daylong clashes between students seeking the quota system’s reform and the Chhatra League and police.

At least six people have been killed in Dhaka, Chattogram and Rangpur during the clashes. Scores more have been injured.

The government has called out paramilitary Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Dhaka, Gazipur, Chattogram, Bogura, Rajshahi and Rangpur to maintain law and order.

The protesters have yet to announce fresh programmes.
