Police used batons, tear gas, sound grenades, and hot water to disperse a long march by Jagannath University teachers and students heading towards the Chief Adviser’s residence, Jamuna, demanding the fulfillment of their three-point charter of demands. At least 50 people—including teachers, students, and journalists—were injured in the attack, with 10 hospitalised.
The incident occurred on Wednesday (May 14) when the procession reached the intersection near Kakrail Mosque after crossing Matsya Bhaban.
In protest, demonstrators staged a sit-in in front of Kakrail Mosque on their way to Jamuna.
More than 1,000 students from the university, accompanied by teachers, began marching towards Jamuna at around 11:30 am. Police first attempted to obstruct them at the entrance of the Gulistan Mazar gate. After facing another blockade at Matsya Bhaban, the protesters pushed through and continued their march.
However, as the procession reached the Kakrail Mosque intersection, police launched a sudden assault using batons, tear gas, sound grenades, and hot water, leaving at least 50 people injured.
Among the injured are Professor Dr. Md Rois Uddin, General Secretary of the University Teachers’ Association, and Mahatab Hossain Limon, General Secretary of the Journalists’ Association. Others injured include Sohan Farazi, Jagannath University correspondent for the Dhaka Tribune, and Mehedi Hasan, correspondent for Dainik Sangbad.
The injured, including journalist Mahatab Hossain Limon, Mehedi Hasan, and several students, were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.
“We will remain here in protest until the police attack on students is investigated and our demands are met,” said Professor Dr. Md Rois Uddin.
