Desk Report : A decision on the registration of the Awami League will be made only after the official gazette banning the party is published, says Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin.
“The decision will be taken in line with the spirit of Bangladesh,” Nasir told Somoy today (May 11).
In response to people demanding a ban on Awami League’s politics, the Advisory Council held an emergency meeting on Saturday (May 10).
At a press conference that night, Law Adviser Asif Nazrul announced that all activities of the Awami League have been banned.
Asif said the council of advisers decided to ban all activities of the Awami League, including activities in cyberspace, under the Anti-Terrorism Act until the trial of the AL and its leaders and workers is completed in the International Crimes Tribunal, aiming to ensure the country`s security and sovereignty.
Earlier, from May 9-10, protesters were holding a sit-in at Shahbagh intersection in the capital, pressing for three demands, including outlawing the Awami League.
They took it to the streets and said that they will remain there until a formal announcement is made banning the Awami League.
