Members of Detective Branch (DB) police arrested seven individuals, including a former Awami League (AL) lawmaker, during a 24-hour operation in Dhaka that ended at 6 am on Sunday.
Among the arrested, Shamima Akhter Khanom, also known as Shamima Shahriar, was a former MP from a reserved seat representing Sunamganj district. Others include: Md Imran Mati, general secretary of Darussalam Thana Swechchhasebak League, Md Ashraf Siddiqui alias Bitu, director of the Centre for Research and Information (CRI) and assistant press secretary to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina , Md Nesar Ahmed alias Nesar Uddin Hawlader, former organising secretary of Cumilla District Chhatra League, Md Robiul Islam, vice president of Darussalam Thana Swechchhasebak League, Md Mosharraf Hossain Sarkar, former organising secretary of Nabinagar Upazila units of AL, Jubo League, and Chhatra League, Mohidul Islam Biplob, general secretary of South Badda Bazar Unit Awami League.
According to DB sources, the individuals were allegedly involved in activities aimed at destabilising the country and spreading panic among the public. Multiple cases have been filed against them in various police stations.
Authorities have not yet disclosed detailed charges, but investigations are ongoing.
