Information and Broadcasting Adviser Md Mahfuz Alam, has said that legitimate demands of the Hindu community will be fulfilled gradually.
He expressed hope that future governments will also remain committed to ensuring the rights and welfare of the country’s Hindu citizens.
He made these remarks while speaking at Sharadiya Durga Utsob celebration at Dhaka University`s Jagannath Hall on Wednesday evening.
Extending Durga Puja greetings to the Hindu community, Mahfuz Alam said, “Heritage of the Hindu community is an integral part of our national history. The history of Bangladesh is one of unity between Hindus and Muslims and their joint struggle for justice and freedom.”
The adviser highlighted the inclusive and multicultural identity of Bangladesh, emphasizing the importance of communal harmony.
“We are committed to building a Bangladesh enriched with many languages, cultures and traditions through mutual respect and peaceful coexistence,” he said.
He also noted that this year’s Durga Puja is being celebrated in a more colourful and festive environment compared to previous years.
“The government has taken effective steps to ensure that Puja is peaceful and joyful for everyone,” he added, thanking all involved for their support and cooperation.
Reflecting on the events of July uprising, Mahfuz Alam strongly criticized the then Sheikh Hasina-led government`s brutal actions.
“Under the direct orders of then Prime Minister, civilians were shot and killed from helicopters,” he added.
He paid tribute to the Hindu individuals who lost their lives during the uprising.
Also present at the event were Education Adviser Prof Dr Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar, Dhaka University political science professor Tasneem Siddiqui and members of the Durga Utsob Celebration Committee.
Later in the evening, Mahfuz Alam visited Dhakeshwari Puja Mandap and exchanged Durga Puja greetings with members of the Hindu community.
