Seven convicted of extracting sand from Jamuna Char, equipment confiscated

A mobile court has arrested seven people and sentenced them to 15 days in jail for extracting sand from Jamuna Char in Bhandarbari union under Dhunat upazila of Bogra district. Besides, 4 dredgers and sand extraction equipment used in sand extraction have been seized. Dhunat Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Executive Magistrate Sanjay Kumar Mahanta conducted the operation in collaboration with Dhunat Thana Police on Sunday evening. The convicts are Sujat Ali, 23, son of late Farid Sarkar of Randhanagar village in Dhunat Upazila and Zelhak Hossain, 35, son of Abdur Rahman of the same village. Sumon Sarkar, 32, son of late Mojibur Rahman of the village, Mahabbat Ali, 32, son of Fazr Ali of Parlakshipur village, Alauddin, 50, son of Asir Uddin of Bilsara village in Tarash upazila of Sirajganj district, Thandu Mandal, 35, son of Azahar Mandal of Gohalia village in Kalihati upazila Hossain Ali, 25, son of Shariful Islam of Beripotal village. Dhunat Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Executive Magistrate Sanjay Kumar Mahanta said six people were arrested and sentenced to 15 days in jail for cutting sand from the Jamuna river. Besides, 4 dredgers were seized and kept in the custody of a local UP member. Dhunat Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kripa Sindhu Bala said the convicts were sent to jail through a court on Monday morning.
