Online Desk : A microbus driver was killed as he was hit by a speeding motorcycle on the Padma Bridge in Munshiganj on Friday morning.
The deceased is Md Tayeb Ali, 34, son of Md Belayet Sheikh, a resident of Bagia under Kashiani Police Station in Gopalganj district.
The accident occurred at about 10:30am on the bridge between the Pillars Numbers 11 and 12 at Mawa side of Munshiganj.
Mawa Traffic Police inspector ASM Ziaul Haider said that the motorcyclist Azmir Hossain, 28, and his wife Sraboni Islam, 27, were arrested with their motorcycle.
According to the police witnesses, microbus driver Tayeb was crossing the Padma Bridge with passengers on board to Kashiani when one of his microbus`s tyres burst with a huge sound. Then he got down of his microbus and was trying to fix the flat tyre. Just at that time, the speeding motorcycle suddenly hit him from behind, leaving him dead on the spot.
The deceased`s body was kept in the police station and will be handed over to his family following the completion of legal procedures, said the inspector.
The police suspected that the accident primarily occurred due to the speeding motorcycle, he added.
However, the bridge authorities have been trying to ascertain the cause of the accident by analysing CCTV footage, he said.
It may be recalled following the opening of Padma Bridge to traffic in June 2022, dozens of accidents happened involving motorcycles. Later, the government suspended plying of motorcycles over the Padma Bridge for several months. However, later the bridge was opened for plying of all kinds of vehicles.
