Harvesting of local Boro is in full swing in Manikganj char areas
  Date : 21-05-2024

The harvesting of local Boro paddy is in full swing at the vast char areas of two big and other small rivers of the district with good production during the current season.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said the local Boro paddy was cultivated at the vast char areas of the two big rivers Padma and Jamuna including most of the small river beds of the district, more than 500 hectares of land this season.

The sources said with the reduction of river water during the winter season, farmers of the areas started planting the saplings of local Boro paddy on the riverbeds. Sometimes they shifted the saplings of the Boro paddy dry land to the wet and clay lands.

Ahmed Ali, 45, a farmer of Andhar Manik under Harirampur upazila said the local Boro paddy needs no irrigation and fertilizers, simply it needs to move from one dry land to another wetland, adding that it needs only labour. He said it is an extra paddy crop for the char people that generally harvested during their hard time.

Md. Hafijuddin, 40, another farmer of Alokdiar char of Shibalaya upazila said though the local Boro paddy is considered as an extra crop but it is very much helpful for the char people as it is not only gives us paddy but also it gives our cattle heads feed.

He said I had cultivated three bighas of local Boro paddy this year and most of them had already been harvested. I got very good production.

Abdul Hamid, 50, a farmer of village Gilanda under Nabagram union of Manikganj Sadar said though local Bor is not a high breed crop but it is very much helpful for us as our food and feed for our cattle heads. BSS
