DGHS issues preventive measures against HMPV spread
  Date : 19-07-2025

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has issued a set of directives to curb the spread of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus causing flu-like symptoms.

The measures, announced on Sunday and signed by Professor Dr. Md Halimur Rashid, line director of the Communicable Disease Control Program, emphasize personal hygiene and social distancing practices.

The guidelines include wearing masks, frequent handwashing with soap or using hand sanitizer for at least 20 seconds, and covering the nose and mouth with an arm or tissue when sneezing or coughing. Used tissues should be disposed of in covered bins immediately, followed by handwashing. The DGHS also advised avoiding contact with infected individuals, maintaining a three-foot distance, and refraining from touching the face with unclean hands. Individuals experiencing symptoms like fever, cough, or breathing difficulties are encouraged to stay home until fully recovered.

The DGHS noted that HMPV causes mild respiratory symptoms, typically subsiding within 2–5 days, and urged the public not to panic but to adhere strictly to health guidelines.

Healthcare facilities and entry points across Bangladesh have been instructed to reinforce health protocols. Officials at medical colleges, district and upazila health offices, and airports have been directed to implement necessary measures to prevent the virus’s spread.

The notice highlighted that HMPV cases have risen significantly in countries like China and others in the subcontinent. Children under 14, adults over 65, pregnant women, individuals with chronic illnesses like asthma or COPD, and those with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable.

The DGHS encouraged people to seek medical assistance at nearby hospitals if needed and assured that all necessary precautions are being taken to manage the situation.
