Fuel Tanker Explosion in Nigeria Kills 77
  Date : 08-02-2025

International Desk : At least 77 people have died, and 25 others have been injured in a devastating fuel tanker explosion in Nigeria. British news outlet BBC reported the incident on Sunday (January 19).

According to the report, the fuel tanker overturned in the Suleja area of north-central Niger State on Saturday. Many people attempted to collect the spilled fuel from the road, during which the tanker exploded, leading to the casualties.

Niger State Governor Umaru Bago described the explosion as alarming, heartbreaking, and tragic in a statement. He noted that in addition to the fatalities, many others suffered varying degrees of burns.

Nigeria is currently experiencing a severe economic crisis, with fuel prices rising fivefold over the past year and a half. This price hike led many to attempt to collect fuel from the overturned tanker.

It is noteworthy that fuel tanker explosions and road accidents are quite common in Nigeria. Such incidents frequently occur due to poor road conditions and poorly maintained vehicles.

In a similar incident last October, over 170 people were killed in Jigawa State, Nigeria.
