C`nawabganj border turns calm, BGB increases vigilance
  Date : 08-02-2025

The border areas of Chowka and Kishanganj areas in Chapainawabganj`s Shibganj upazila, remained calm throughout Sunday due to strong vigilance of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).

BGB officials have ensured stability by maintaining a strong presence and dissuading onlookers from gathering near the border.

It was seen that farmers with land near the border resumed their agricultural activities on Sunday morning. However, many expressed lingering fear despite the restoration of normalcy.

“Despite returning to the fields, farmers are still apprehensive due to the recent incidents,” said a local farmer.

Meanwhile, BGB officials were seen managing crowds in Kaliganj Mouza, allowing only farmers with fields in the area to access their lands.

The 59th BGB Battalion Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Golam Kibria, stated that there was no ongoing tension at the border. He assured that local farmers were working as usual and that routine patrols were being conducted by both BGB and the Indian Border Security Force (BSF). He urged people to avoid the border area without any emergency for safety reasons.

The tension escalated on Saturday when BSF personnel and over a hundred Indian nationals reportedly trespassed into Bangladeshi territory, cutting down mango and jujube trees in Chowka border area. In response, BGB issued a public call for assistance via loudspeakers, prompting locals to rush to the area. The situation worsened when BSF personnel used sound grenades and tear gas shells, while locals retaliated. The confrontation left five Bangladeshi citizens injured, and the intruding group fled, leaving behind the cut trees and branches.

Following the incident, a flag meeting was held between BGB and BSF officials, during which BSF expressed regret for the actions of their personnel and the associated damages.

Local farmers reported significant damage to their crops. Kaliganj farmer Belal Uddin said that his maize field spanning 10 kathas was completely destroyed. Similarly, Moinul Islam from Murad Tola reported that his onion, coriander, and tomato fields covering nine kathas were trampled during the chaos. Villagers estimated that at least seven bighas of farmland were damaged, with approximately 30 mango trees and over 100 jujube trees cut down by the intruders.

Noyon Mia, the upazila agriculture officer, visited the affected areas and reported damage to two bighas of wheat, two bighas of maize, three bighas of mustard, along with banana, mango, and jujube trees.

BGB Rajshahi Sector Commander Colonel Imran Ibne Rauf and 59th BGB Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Golam Kibria visited the Chowka border area on Sunday. They reassured locals that the situation was under control and requested them to avoid the border areas to prevent further incidents. They also urged everyone to ensure the safety of farmers` crops.
