Chalanbeel region likely to witness bumper corn harvest this year
  Date : 08-02-2025

Mirza Abdur Rob Bulbul, Staff Reporter: Bangladesh`s historic Chalanbeel region is well-known to the people of the whole country as a storehouse of grain and fish. Bangladesh is an agricultural country with 80% of the country`s population dependent on agriculture as their only source of livelihood. Agriculture is the main driving force behind the overall development of Bangladesh. Corn has been cultivated in the famous Chalanbeel region of Bangladesh this year. According to the information of the Chalanbeel Upazila Agriculture Office, 15,000 hectares of land have been cultivated, out of which corn has been cultivated in 1,470 hectares of land without cultivation and 13,530 hectares of cropland have been cultivated. According to the information of the Upazila Agriculture Office, the target of corn production this year has been set at 140,000 (one lakh forty thousand) metric tons. 7,000 farmers are directly involved in corn cultivation. This year, as an official incentive, 2,250 farmers in 9 upazilas of the Beel region have been provided with 2 kg of maize seeds, 20 kg of DAP fertilizer and 10 kg of MOP fertilizer free of charge to each farmer for maize cultivation. The upazilas of the Chalanbeel area are Tarash, Ullapara, Shahjadpur, Faridpur, Bhangura, Chatmohar, Singra, Gurudaspur and Atrai. Thousands of farmers in the region are expecting good maize cultivation due to favorable weather conditions this year. Although there was no timely rain this year, there was no loss to the farmers in maize production. In the search for information, directly spoke to farmers Md. Seraj Uddin of Makarshan village and Md. Rafiqul Islam of Nadosaidpur village. They told this reporter with great sincerity and joy that there will be an unexpected crop production. On the other hand, they expressed their disappointment with great sadness. It is true that the crop will be higher this year compared to other years, but the farmers are worried about determining a fair price for the crop. Maize cultivation will be profitable this year compared to paddy cultivation. Therefore, the farmers of this region think that maize cultivation will increase further in this region next year. But although there are concerns among the farmers about the price, the crop yield will be unexpected due to the tireless work of the farmers and the timely and good advice of the officers and employees working in the agriculture department. While taking pictures in the field of Dighisadguna village, the reporter came across a sign board of the Agriculture Department`s maize cultivation field school, Dighisadguna village resident Md. Asmat Ali told this reporter. When contacted, the officials of the agriculture department said that the maize yield will be better than the set target, but the agricultural officials assured the farmers that they will not face any problems with the price. Yesterday, when they went to the Nadosaidpur field to investigate the information on the spot, it was seen that the ears of the early variety of maize have started to emerge, which is visible in the picture.

When contacted directly with the Upazila Agriculture Officer Agriculturist Md. Abdullah Al Mamun, he said very sincerely that this year the farmers of the upazila have been greatly encouraged to cultivate maize. Farmers are being advised by visiting the fields regularly and there is no doubt that there will be a bumper maize yield in the upazila this year if there are no natural disasters and crop failures. Maize has been cultivated on 1490 hectares of land in Tarash upazila alone. He said that the production target will be 15347 metric tons. He also said that farmers are being advised to cultivate jute and sesame in that land after the maize cultivation. Because jute and sesame can be harvested in just two months. Therefore, he told this reporter that if jute and sesame are cultivated in those lands after the maize is harvested, the farmers will benefit even more.
