Over one lakh sacrificial animals ready in Jamalpur

(BSS) - Over one lakh sacrificial animals are available in the district for the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha this year.

According to the Department of Livestock Services (DLS) in Jamalpur, a total of 102,462 animals are ready for sale in the sacrificial market this year. 11,644 farm owners have been rearing the animals over the Eid-ul-Azha.

The office said the total includes 47,767 cows, 877 buffalos, 48,713 goats, and 5,062 sheep. Besides, some farmers have also been rearing Dumbas and Garals in Madarganj Upazila of the district. A total of 43 Dumbas and Garals are expected to be sold this year.

DLS sources said the demand for sacrificial animals in the district is about 55,000. The surplus will stand at 47,000 this year after meeting the local demand.

Last year, farmers reared 95,170 animals for Eid-ul-Azha, including 40,138 cows, 50,174 goats, 3,829 sheep, and 1,029 buffalos.

Abid Al Diya, owner of Moyna Agro Farm at Pathalia village in Jamalpur Sadar Upazila, reared 17 cows targeting the Eid-ul-Azha market this year. He said, "I`m expecting a net profit of Taka 3 to 3.5 lakh by selling the cows."

Last year he made a profit of Taka 2.18 lakh by selling 18 cows.

District Livestock Officer Dr Md Sanowar Hossain said, "We provide all necessary support to the farmers for rearing animals and encourage them to feed natural fodder."
