Khalilur calls press conference to address corridor issue
  Date : 23-05-2025

National Security Adviser Khalilur Rahman has called a press conference to address the issue surrounding the proposed humanitarian corridor focused on Myanmar’s Rakhine region. The briefing will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday (May 21) at the Foreign Service Academy on Bailey Road in Dhaka.

The announcement comes amid ongoing discussions and debates over the proposal to establish a humanitarian corridor. Khalilur Rahman is expected to clarify the matter during the briefing.

Due to continuing clashes between the military and militia groups in Myanmar`s Rakhine State, ordinary civilians are facing severe shortages of food and medical supplies. Delivering aid within Myanmar has become increasingly difficult, prompting the international community and the United Nations to stress the need for a humanitarian corridor.

Discussions are underway about Bangladesh potentially facilitating humanitarian aid delivery into Myanmar through its territory. The government has stated that any such corridor would be used strictly for humanitarian purposes — not for military or commercial activities.

However, critics have raised concerns, arguing that the corridor could pose a threat to national security.

During the press conference, Khalilur Rahman is expected to present various facts and data related to the proposed humanitarian corridor and respond to questions from the media.

Earlier, Khalilur Rahman clarified that no agreement has been reached regarding a humanitarian corridor. Speaking as a special guest at a seminar organized by the Armed Forces Division (AFD) and the Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) on May 4 at the BUP campus, he said: “We have not held any discussions regarding a humanitarian corridor, nor have we signed any agreement or memorandum of understanding. This is not a ‘corridor’ — it is a humanitarian channel. The definition of a corridor is different.”
