Rafiqul Islam, Kushtia Correspondent: Collision and a chase-and-counter-chase incident occurred between Jamaat and BNP supporters in Mirpur, Kushtia, centering on separate programs organized by the two parties. At least two people, including Mirpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Shahidul Islam, sustained minor injuries during the incident.
The incident took place on Saturday (October 3) afternoon at Ajutala Bazar in Atigram, under Chhatian Union of the upazila.
It has been reported that on Friday (October 2), BNP leaders and activists alleged that political discussions were being held at a mosque in Atigram following the Isha prayers. A verbal altercation and a scuffle ensued between the groups that same night.
In protest against this incident, Jamaat announced a protest program at Ajutala Bazar for Saturday afternoon. Intense tension arose in the area when the BNP also announced a program at the same location and time.
On Saturday afternoon, shortly after Jamaat leaders and activists concluded their program and were leaving the site, BNP activists arrived; some BNP members then confronted a few Jamaat leaders.
While law enforcement personnel were attempting to disperse the two groups, Mirpur Police Station OC Md. Shahidul Islam sustained minor injuries.
Regarding the incident, Mirpur Police Station OC Shahidul Islam Shahid stated, "I suffered a minor injury and received first aid. Additional police have now been deployed at the scene, and the overall situation in the area is normal and under police control. Patrols have been intensified in the area to prevent any untoward incidents."
