  History in Manikganj–3: Afrooza Khanam Rita Triumphs Over Rebel Challenge, Supporters Call for Cabinet Role

Kamrul Hasan: Despite facing a rebel candidate from within her own party, Afrooza Khanam Rita secured a decisive victory in Manikganj–3, defeating the 11-party alliance nominee by a margin of 103,104 votes. Nominated by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), she is the daughter of the late minister Harunur Rashid Khan Monnoo. In the 55-year history of Bangladesh’s independence, she becomes the first woman to be directly elected as Member of Parliament from Manikganj–3—an outcome widely seen as ushering in a new chapter in local politics.
This year’s contest in Manikganj–3 had drawn particular attention. The presence of a rebel candidate within the BNP, combined with a unified campaign by the 11-party alliance, led many analysts to predict a fiercely competitive race. Yet Rita won overwhelmingly in 148 of the constituency’s 151 polling centres, effectively turning what was expected to be a tight battle into a commanding mandate.
Political observers argue that the result underscores three key dynamics:
A strong organisational base can significantly blunt the impact of rebel candidates.
Local credibility and family political legacy remain powerful factors in rural voting behaviour.
Voter confidence in female leadership is increasingly visible and measurable.
Rita previously served as a member of the BNP’s National Executive Committee, was twice elected president of the district BNP, and currently heads its convening committee. She also serves on the advisory council to the BNP Chairperson. Party insiders attribute her success to long-standing organisational experience and direct engagement with grassroots workers. In a period marked by political volatility, maintaining internal unity posed a serious challenge—one that party leaders claim she navigated with notable effectiveness.

A Parallel Presence in Politics and the Economy--

Recognised as a board-standing graduate of the University of Dhaka, Rita is also a prominent figure in the business community. She chairs Monnoo Group of Industries, Monnoo Medical College & Hospital, and Monnoo International School & College.
Supporters highlight her contributions to local economic development, particularly through investments in industry and healthcare that have generated employment opportunities. At the national level, she is regarded as a successful entrepreneur with established credibility beyond politics.

Growing Calls for a Ministerial Portfolio:-

Following her landslide victory, calls have intensified for her appointment to a key ministry. Several party leaders believe she could play an effective role in development-oriented portfolios such as industry, health, communications, or education.
Local business leaders, educators, and professionals have expressed hope that, if included in the cabinet, she would prioritise:
Industrial policy reforms aimed at job creation;
Strengthening healthcare infrastructure;
Expanding transport and communication networks;
Advancing women’s economic and social empowerment.
The Manikganj–3 result is more than a constituency-level victory; it carries broader political implications. Amid party fragmentation, coalition politics, and organisational strains, the election demonstrates how a strong candidate with deep local acceptance can shape electoral outcomes decisively.
At the same time, it stands as a meaningful marker in the rise of female political leadership and the gradual erosion of long-standing barriers to women’s representation.
Political analysts note that the next critical test will be her performance in parliament—how active and influential she proves in policymaking. A large electoral mandate raises expectations, and with it, the standards of accountability.
