Bangladesh, China sign MoU to expand economic and infrastructure cooperation

Deal with Chinese construction giant opens new avenues for investment in ports, transport, energy, logistics and industrial development

Bagerhat Correspondent: Bangladesh and China have taken a fresh step towards strengthening their economic partnership, with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at expanding investment and cooperation in infrastructure, transport, energy, logistics and industrial development.

The agreement, signed on Thursday in the presence of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at Mongla Port, is expected to create new opportunities for Chinese investment in Bangladesh and support the country`s infrastructure modernisation and economic growth.

Invest Bangladesh and China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) signed the MoU at a ceremony at Mongla Port on Thursday morning, Prime Minister`s Deputy Press Secretary Jahidul Islam Rony said.

Invest Bangladesh Member (Industrial Zone) Saleh Ahmed and Li Chongyang, Chairman of China Engineering Construction Corporation, a subsidiary of CRCC, signed the agreement on behalf of their respective organisations.

Road Transport and Bridges, Railways and Shipping Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam, Invest Bangladesh Chairman Ashik Chowdhury and CRCC Chairman Dai Hegen were present at the ceremony.

Under the agreement, the two sides will explore investment opportunities and strengthen cooperation in several priority areas, including energy, industrial development, environmentally friendly infrastructure, transport, logistics and human resource development.

The partnership is also expected to cover skills development and environmental initiatives, creating scope for broader engagement between Bangladeshi and Chinese businesses.

Invest Bangladesh will facilitate connections between potential investors and relevant government and private-sector stakeholders while coordinating their engagement to help translate investment opportunities into practical projects.

Following the signing ceremony, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman exchanged views with members of the Chinese delegation, reflecting the government`s interest in attracting foreign investment and strengthening economic relations with China.

The agreement comes at a time when Bangladesh is seeking to improve its infrastructure, expand industrial capacity, diversify investment sources and strengthen its position as a regional trade and logistics hub.

Mongla Port, one of the country`s major maritime gateways, has particular importance in this regard. Its modernisation and expansion could help improve cargo handling capacity, facilitate international trade and support economic activities in the country`s southwestern region.

As part of his Mongla visit, the Prime Minister was also scheduled to lay the foundation stones of two container jetties and associated infrastructure under the port`s expansion and modernisation project.

The development initiative is expected to strengthen the port`s operational capacity and improve its ability to handle growing domestic and international cargo volumes.

The government`s focus on Mongla also highlights the importance of developing regional infrastructure alongside the country`s established commercial centres. Improved port facilities, transport links and logistics services could generate new business opportunities, encourage industrial investment and create employment.

After completing his programmes in Mongla, Tarique Rahman was scheduled to visit the shrine of Hazrat Khan Jahan Ali (R) at Mogra in Bagerhat town.

He was then scheduled to travel to Khulna, where he would make a brief stop at the Circuit House before attending the opening ceremony of Notun Kuri Sports (Season-2) at Khulna District Stadium at 3:00 pm.

The Prime Minister was scheduled to return to Dhaka by helicopter at 4:30 pm, reaching Tejgaon Airport at around 5:15 pm.

Earlier, he left the old Tejgaon Airport in Dhaka by helicopter at 9:15 am and landed at the Mongla Port helipad at 9:50 am.

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Aninda Islam Amit, State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Shaikh Faridul Islam, State Minister for Shipping and Bridges Md Razib Ahsan, Khulna-5 MP Ali Asgar Lobi and Khulna-4 MP SK Azizul Bari Helal received him at the helipad.

The latest agreement signals renewed momentum in Bangladesh-China economic engagement, with infrastructure and investment cooperation emerging as important areas of bilateral relations.

Its actual impact, however, will depend on how effectively the proposed investment opportunities are translated into concrete projects, ensuring transparency, economic viability, environmental sustainability and tangible benefits for the people of Bangladesh.
