Bangladesh road traffic crashes kill 29 people: baby born before mother`s death on highway
  Date : 23-04-2024

News Desk : Tangail saw the highest number, seven, of deaths in two accidents on Saturday. The crashes and subsequent protests disrupted traffic for hours on the Dhaka-Tangail Highway.

In Mymensingh, a baby girl was born on the highway after a truck ran over and killed her parents and 6-year-old sister.

7 DEAD IN TANGAIL

In Tangail`s Mirzapur, at least four people died and nine others were injured after a bus ploughed into a truck on the Dhaka-Tangail Highway around 4:30am on Saturday, according to Molla Tutul, chief of Mirzapur Gorai Highway Police Station.

Tutul said a bus operated by Binimoy Paribahan from Dhanbari crashed into the back of a sand-laden truck, killing three passengers at the scene.

Fire service and police personnel, aided by locals, rescued 10 people from the scene and admitted them to a hospital, where one of them died, said Tutul. The authorities could not immediately identify the victims.

Traffic on the highway came to a standstill following the accident, causing immense suffering to travellers.

The situation returned to normal around 6:45am after police personnel removed the bus from the road.

Hours later, around 11:30am, a bus crushed a woman and her two children on the same highway near the Bangabandhu Bridge.

The victims have been identified as Parveen Akter, 27, her daughter Sadia Akter, 9, and son Sumon, 7.

Agitated locals blocked the highway demanding a footbridge at the scene after the accident, halting traffic for more than two hours.

Parveen, along with her two children, went to Pakulla Bus Stop in Mirzapur to travel to her in-law`s house in Basail from her parents’ home in Panisail. A speeding bus crushed them while they were crossing the highway, leaving Sadia dead on the spot, Tutul said.

Resident Physician Lutfar Rahman at Sheikh Hasina Medical College Hospital in Tangail Sadar declared the mother and son dead after they were shifted there from Jamurki Health Complex.

"Accidents are frequent in Pakulla Bus Stop because there is no footbridge. We had protested and blocked the highway several times, demanding a footbridge. The authorities had promised to construct a footbridge but did not keep their word," said Alamgir Hossian, a local.

Local politicians and rights activists also joined the protests with the locals after the latest accident. They left the highway after two and a half hours as the authorities reassured them of meeting their demand.

SIRAJGANJ

On the other side of the Bangabandhu Bridge, in Sirajganj’s Tarash, a Dhaka-bound bus and a truck hit trees after a head-on collision on the Hatikumrul-Bonpara Highway, killing three people on the spot.

Two of the dead were Mirazul Islam, 34, from Pabna’s Ishwardi, and Abdul Aziz, 42, from Rajshahi’s Bagmara. The other victim could not be identified immediately.

Lutfor Rahman, chief of Hatikumrul Highway Police Station, said police seized the vehicles, but the drivers and their assistants fled.
