A letter will be sent to Meta and other online platforms through the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) requesting the blocking of the Awami League’s official Facebook page and other online activities.
Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser for the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, confirmed the development on Sunday, following the Advisory Council’s decision to ban all Awami League activities under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
“We are waiting for the official circular based on the Advisory Council`s decision. Once it is issued, we will formally send letters through the BTRC to Meta and other platforms to ban these pages. We hope the directive will be implemented quickly if sent via the BTRC,” Taiyeb said.
The Awami League currently operates a verified Facebook page named ‘Bangladesh Awami League’, which has nearly four million followers.
Following the announcement of the ban on Saturday night, a protest statement was immediately posted on the page, followed shortly by an official press release. The page has continued to publish regular posts since then.
