Online Desk : A Dhaka University student was murdered following a brutal attack with sharp weapon near Ramna Kali Mandir gate, near to campus, on late Tuesday night.
The victim, Shahriar Alam Samyo, 25, was a 2018-19 session student of the Institute of Education and Research at the university and Literary and Publication Secretary of A.F. Rahman Hall unit.
According to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), Samyo was brought in shortly after midnight in a severely injured state and was pronounced dead on arrival. Hospital staff confirmed that multiple sharp weapon injuries were found across his body.
Just hours before the attack, Samyo had posted a video on Facebook showing him singing with friends at a public concert held at Suhrawardy Udyan, where prominent bands performed.
Witness accounts suggest the incident stemmed from a motorcycle collision near the Suhrawardy Udyan open stage. An argument reportedly escalated into a physical confrontation, during which Samyo was stabbed in the thigh with a sharp weapon. The assailant fled the scene immediately afterward.
Police have arrested one person in connection with the attack. Forensic teams have since collected evidence from the site, and an investigation is underway.
A police spokesperson confirmed that a manhunt for other suspects is ongoing but declined to speculate on the motive behind the killing.
The Dhaka University community was left in shock. Students gathered outside the hospital in the early hours of Wednesday, demanding a swift and transparent investigation. DU unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) described Samyo as a “dedicated activist with a promising future in student politics” and called for justice.
The attack has reignited concerns over campus safety, particularly in the Suhrawardy Udyan area, which has been the scene of multiple violent incidents in recent years. Students and university representatives have urged authorities to boost nighttime security and increase police patrols in and around the campus.
Samyo hailed from Sirajganj’s Ullapara upazila and began his education at Momena Ali Biggan School in Jhikira. He later studied at BAF Shaheen College in Dhaka Cantonment and BCIC College in Mirpur before enrolling at Dhaka University as a student of the Class of 2024.
Suhrawardy Udyan has a troubling history of violent incidents. In recent years, the park has been the site of multiple deaths, including murder of a child in 2015, a fatal altercation over 200 taka in 2022, and several politically linked attacks in 2023 and 2024. The recurrence of such incidents has raised serious questions about law enforcement and surveillance in the area.
Authorities have yet to release further details about the investigation.
