Chargesheet filed against Apon jewelers owner in tax evasion & money laundering Case
  Date : 03-03-2021
Ashouk Kumar Dhar: A chargesheet has been filed against the owner of Apon Jewelers, Dildar Ahmed Selim, in a case involving allegations of large-scale tax evasion, gold hoarding, and money laundering.

Assistant Revenue Officer Delwar Hossain submitted the chargesheet to the General Registration (GR) branch of the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in connection with a case filed at Ramna Police Station.

Court sources said the chargesheet outlines allegations that Apon Jewelers evaded approximately Tk 26.52 crore in taxes and was involved in laundering a significantly larger amount through illicit transactions. Investigators reportedly claimed that around Tk 190.06 crore was moved to purchase gold ornaments and diamonds at different times, resulting in substantial unpaid tax liabilities.

The case also draws public attention due to earlier controversies linked to the family of the accused. Safat Ahmed, son of Dildar Ahmed Selim, was previously arrested as a main accused in the widely discussed Banani Raintree Hotel rape case in 2016, an incident that sparked nationwide protests and sustained media attention.

Following subsequent investigations into financial irregularities, customs intelligence operations had earlier seized a large quantity of gold ornaments from multiple showrooms of Apon Jewelers during enforcement drives.

Officials say the case will now proceed through the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court as legal proceedings continue.
