No ICU beds available at 7 public hospitals

Online Desk: With the recent surge of Covid-19, people are in search of ICU beds for critical patients but the country does not have enough beds for all of them 

There are no beds empty in the Intensive Care Units (ICUs) for coronavirus patients in seven of the ten government Covid-19 dedicated hospitals in the country.

The information came from the health directorate through its daily Covid-19 update on Wednesday.

The department said in a statement that the ICU at Kurmitola General Hospital has 10 beds, Sheikh Russell Gastroliver Hospital has 16 beds, Government Employees Hospital has six beds, Dhaka Medical College Hospital has 20 beds, Mugda Hospital has 19 beds, Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital has 10 beds and Bangabandhu Medical College Hospital has 20 beds, all of which are currently occupied by patients.

Of the government enlisted hospitals, only four out of 26 beds at Kuwait Bangladesh Friendship Government Hospital and only one bed out of 15 beds at Rajarbagh Police Hospital are vacant,

Coronavirus patients are treated at the Infectious Diseases Hospital, a government hospital, but it has no ICU beds.

In other words, 137 out of 142 beds for coronavirus patients in the 10 government hospitals in Dhaka listed by the Health Department are occupied, and only five beds are vacant.

On the other hand, the private hospitals listed by the department have a total of 357 ICU beds for coronavirus patients. Of these, 350 beds are occupied by patients and only seven beds are empty.

According to the Department of Health, there are a total of 792 ICU beds for coronavirus patients all over the country. Of these, 655 beds are occupied and 137 beds are vacant.
