Former NBR chairman Shah Abdul Hannan dies

MM Rahmatullah: Former chairman of the National Board of Revenue Shah Abdul Hannan is no more. Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajiun. He died at a hospital in the capital on Wednesday.
Shah Abdul Hannan`s brother Shah Abdul Halim said, "He has been undergoing treatment at Hospital since May 8. He died of a second heart attack at 10:30 am on Wednesday."
According to his family sources, the first janaza of the deceased will be held at Dhanmondi Edgah Mosque after Johar on Wednesday, the second janaza after Asr at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque and after that his burial will be completed at Shahjahanpur Cemetery.
Shah Abdul Hannan was an Islamic thinker, educator, writer, economist and social worker. He was the Chairman of the National Board of Revenue and the Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank. He was also the founder entrepreneur of Darul Ihsan University and North South University and former chairman of Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited.
Shah Abdul Hannan, chairman of Diganta Media Corporation, was born on 1 January 1939 in the famous Shah family of Katiadi police station in Kishoreganj district of greater Mymensingh. He graduated from Dhaka University in 1959 with a degree in Economics and Political Science and completed his master`s degree in 1961.
Shah Hannan started his career as a teacher. He joined Dhaka College in 1962 as a lecturer in political science. In 1963 he joined the Pakistan Finance Service. He last retired from the post of Secretary to the Government of Bangladesh in 1998.
Among them was the chairman of the National Board of Revenue, where he was one of the proponents of the introduction of VAT. He was the Secretary of the Banking Division of the Ministry of Finance, Social Welfare and most recently the Department of Internal Resources of the Ministry of Finance. Earlier, he was the Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank and the Director General of the Anti-Corruption Bureau. Shah Hannan has one son, one daughter, three brothers and many relatives and admirers.
