6 die from electrocution : Three Palli Bidyut officials suspended, 1 fired

Three officials of Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB), also known as Palli Bidyut Samity, have been suspended for their alleged negligence over the death of six family members due to electrocution in East Goalbari village of Juri upazila in Moulvibazar on March 26.

Besides, one employee has been terminated by higher authorities.

ABM Mizanur Rahman, general manager of the Rural Electrification Board, Moulvibazar, acknowledged the matter on Tuesday night.

He said the suspended officials are-- Sohel Rana Chowdhury, deputy general manager of Barlekha Office overseeing electricity supply in East Goalbari, Assistant General Manager Ashraful Huda, and Rezaul Karim Talukder, in charge of the Juri Office.

The employee, who is terminated, is apprentice lineman Md Ashiq Mia.

Earlier, a five-member committee, led by Chief Engineer Biswanath Sikder, was formed to investigate the accident.


The committee recommended disciplinary action against the four officials and employees involved. Further investigation is underway.

On March 26, six members of a family electrocuted when a snapped electric wire fell on the roof of a tin-shed house at East Goalbari in Juri upazila in Moulvibazar district.

The deceased were --- speech impaired Fayzur Rahman, 50, his wife Shiri Begum, 45, seven-year-old son Sayem Uddin; and three daughters--Samia Begum, 15, Sonia Begum, 12, and Sabina Akter, 9.
