At least 50 Muslims in India killed in extrajudicial incidents in 2025
  Date : 15-01-2026

MT Desk: Hate-driven actions against Muslims have continued in India under the Hindutva-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, with at least 50 Muslims killed in extrajudicial incidents during the past year.

the findings are detailed in data released by advocacy organization, the South Asia Justice Campaign, whose India Persecution Tracker documents patterns of unlawful killings, custodial deaths, mob violence and other serious abuses targenting religious minorities in India.

The findings mark a sustained increase compared with previous years. The tracker recorded 21 extrajudicial killings of Muslims by state actors in 2024 and 20 in 2023. The report reveals that 23 of the victims were killed in incidents involving Indian police, armed forces and other state security personnel, while 27 deaths were linked to violence by Hindu extremists. Two of the victims were children.

The tracker also documented two cases in which Muslims allegedly died by suicide following sustained violence or harassment by Hindu extremist groups. In addition, the tracker recorded incidents of arbitrary arrests, evictions, and forced displacement of Bengali-speaking Muslims. The report further observed that under the Modi-led government, religiously motivated violence and retaliatory actions by Hindu extremists against religious minorities—particularly Muslims—have reached alarming levels.

The report warns that persecution of religious minorities in India has become increasingly routinized, marked by both scale and brutality, and cautions that the continued normalization of lethal state force and extremist violence has placed minorities at growing and persistent risk. Muslims are routinely targeted for reprisals, including for offering prayers in public places or refusing to conform to Hindutva slogans, it added.
