NBR plans to launch massive nationwide tax survey
  Date : 22-04-2026

(BSS) - The National Revenue Board (NBR) is set to initiate a massive nationwide tax survey project aimed at expanding the tax net and ensuring transparency through advanced digital integration.

NBR Chairman Md. Abdur Rahman Khan announced these plans during a pre-budget discussion held today at the Revenue Building conference room in the city.

The Chairman emphasized his commitment to the survey, noting that while he has been pushing for the project since taking office, it is now a top priority that must be executed.

He stated that the NBR will conduct a phased, comprehensive survey across Bangladesh, even if the process takes up to ten years to complete.

Abdur Rahman Khan described the initiative as a fine-tooth comb operation to ensure every corner of the country is covered.

In a significant move toward digitalization, he mentioned that the NBR plans to link tax returns with data from utility providers such as DESCO and DPDC.

"Under this system, when a taxpayer submits their return, they will be notified of electric meters and properties registered in their name," he added.

"If these assets or the income derived from them are not disclosed in their wealth statement, the taxpayer will be required to provide an explanation before they can complete their submission," he stated.

The NBR chief noted that the NBR is also working on integrating the tax system with the banking sector.

"This will allow taxpayers to automatically pull four essential pieces of information into their returns: closing balances, profit earned, tax deducted at source, and bank charges," he added.

The Chairman reported that the transition to 100% mandatory online tax
returns has been highly successful.

"Most eligible taxpayers have already filed their returns, with approximately
5,000 filings still occurring daily as some requested time extensions. This
digital shift is expected to significantly reduce the opportunities for tax
evasion," he added.

The pre-budget discussion was attended by representatives from 12 major
business organizations, including the Bangladesh Book Publishers and Sellers
Association, the Bangladesh Paper Mills Association, and the Bangladesh
Furniture Exporters Association.

During the meeting, these industry leaders urged the NBR to reduce taxes on
imported goods essential for their respective sectors.
