Career guidance programme urges students to focus on studies, uphold ethics and work for national welfare
University Correspondent: The Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir`s Titumir College unit has organised a freshers` reception and career guidance programme for more than 1,400 newly admitted honours first-year students of the 2025-26 academic session at the college campus in Dhaka, despite an administrative restriction on holding the event.
The programme was held on Thursday (October 15) at 10:00am on the college grounds under Dhaka Central University. Guests welcomed the new students and handed over gifts to them as part of the event.
Addressing the programme as the chief guest, former central president of Chhatra Shibir, Zahidul Islam, said students, workers, children and people from different walks of life, alongside various organisations, had participated in the July uprising against authoritarian rule.
He alleged that a group was attempting to divert the July movement from its original course.
Urging the freshers to concentrate on their studies, Zahidul said they should work hard to achieve their goals and contribute to the welfare of the country and its people while maintaining strong moral values and principles.
He also encouraged students to demonstrate their talent, competence and skills, stressing the importance of making proper use of time and avoiding unnecessary distractions.
Students should use social media responsibly and focus on its useful and positive aspects, he added.
Speaking as a special guest, Asif Abdullah, transport secretary of the Dhaka University Central Students` Union (DUCSU), criticised the BNP over its election manifesto and questioned the appointment of administrators in different districts and city corporations.
He alleged that the party was not following its own manifesto and that unelected individuals had been entrusted with administrative responsibilities without prior public disclosure of the appointment process.
Referring to the college administration`s decision regarding the programme, Asif said a notice had been issued the previous night that, in his view, was intended to disrupt the event.
The freshers` reception was organised despite a restriction imposed by the college administration. The organisers` statement said the programme drew enthusiastic participation from newly admitted students.
However, the press release did not provide details of the college administration`s position or any subsequent action concerning the organisers` decision to proceed with the event despite the restriction.
The programme was chaired by Khaedemul Islam Siam, president of the Titumir College unit of Chhatra Shibir, and conducted by its secretary, Sohel Rana.
Other attendees included Numayer Abdullah, central public relations secretary of Chhatra Shibir, and Saiful Islam Sayem, president of the organisation`s Dhaka Metropolitan North unit, along with leaders from different levels of its metropolitan and college units.
The programme combined a welcome for newly admitted students with guidance on academic discipline, personal development, career preparation and ethical responsibility.
The event also brought the dispute between the student organisation and the college administration into focus, highlighting the importance of clarifying institutional restrictions and ensuring that campus programmes are conducted in accordance with applicable rules.
