Diplomatic Desk: European Union (EU) Ambassador and Head of Delegation to Bangladesh Michael Miller met Leader of the Opposition and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman MP on Thursday, discussing the implementation of the July Charter, the referendum mandate, parliamentary responsibilities and the ongoing reform process.

The courtesy meeting was held at Dr Shafiqur Rahman`s office in Bashundhara in the capital at 3:00pm, according to a press release issued by Jamaat-e-Islami.

The meeting comes amid continuing discussions over Bangladesh`s political reforms and the roles of the government and opposition in parliament. The exchange provided an opportunity to discuss issues of mutual interest to Bangladesh and the European Union, as well as the future direction of bilateral relations.

During the meeting, the two sides held detailed discussions on implementing the July Charter and the outcome of the referendum. They also exchanged views on the respective roles of the ruling and opposition parties in the Jatiya Sangsad and the broader reform process.

The discussions highlighted the importance of maintaining engagement between Bangladesh`s political leadership and international partners on matters concerning democratic institutions, governance and national development.

Both sides expressed optimism that bilateral relations between Bangladesh and the European Union would continue to strengthen, with cooperation contributing to the country`s development and progress.

Ambassador Miller was accompanied by Kamila Partika, First Counsellor and Political Officer at the EU Delegation.

Dr Shafiqur Rahman was joined by Barrister Mir Ahmad Bin Quasem Arman MP, his foreign affairs adviser, and Ali Ahmad Mabrur, a member of the opposition leader`s foreign affairs advisory committee.
