National priority needed to address climate risks

Saiful Islam: Bangladesh is at the forefront of climate risks. In this reality, there is no alternative to adaptation. This is not a distant idea, but it has become urgent to prioritize addressing climate risks at the national level. And training programs play a very important role in addressing these risks. BIBM Director General Dr. Md. Ejazul Islam said these things at the inauguration of a five-day training course titled ‘Adaptation Financing Masterclass’ organized by the Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management (BIBM) on Sunday (January 18). He said that banks and financial institutions have a decisive role in transforming awareness from implementation, planning from investment and from isolated projects to large-scale effective solutions. This masterclass is designed to increase national capacity in a practical way. Sonali Bank recovers Tk 745 crore from top 20 defaulters Banks start campaigning for ‘Yes’ vote in referendum Central Bank buys dollars to prevent depreciation The training will increase participants’ knowledge about climate finance, especially adaptation finance, and its relevance in banking and financial decision-making. In addition, the capacity to identify, evaluate, and structure bankable and sustainable adaptation projects in line with national priorities will be developed. In addition, the skills to incorporate climate risk and adaptation considerations in loan appraisal, risk management, and portfolio management will be further strengthened. BIBM Professor and Training Director Dr. Mohammad Tajul Islam delivered the welcome speech at the event. Chowdhury Liaquat Ali, Director of Sustainable Finance Department of Bangladesh Bank, and M. Mosleh Uddin, BIBM Professor (Selection Grade) Mohammad Mohiuddin Siddiqui and Assistant Professor Tahmina Rahman, among others.
