SABCCI calls for urgent action to ensure safety of Bangladeshi workers in Saudi Arabia

Desk Report: The Saudi Arabia-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SABCCI) has expressed deep concern over the ongoing geopolitical conflict and security situation in the Middle East, calling for urgent and effective diplomatic initiatives to ensure the safety and well-being of Bangladeshi expatriates in Saudi Arabia.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the chamber extended its sympathy to the victims of the conflict and called for an immediate, peaceful resolution to the crisis. It also urged the Bangladesh government and relevant international stakeholders to take coordinated steps to protect Bangladeshi nationals living and working in the region.

SABCCI said it was closely monitoring the evolving situation and stressed that the consequences of prolonged instability would extend beyond humanitarian concerns, potentially affecting employment, remittance inflows, trade, investment and economic relations between Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia.

The chamber noted that Saudi Arabia is an important destination for Bangladeshi migrant workers and a key economic partner of Bangladesh. Any prolonged disruption could create uncertainty for expatriate workers, their families and businesses in both countries.

According to recent media reports cited by the chamber, the cancellation of 28 flights over the past few days had disrupted the travel arrangements of more than 13,000 Bangladeshi workers in Saudi Arabia. If the situation continues, many workers could face uncertainty over joining their workplaces within scheduled timelines, job security and the financial well-being of their families.

The chamber warned that prolonged disruptions could also affect Bangladesh`s foreign currency earnings and put additional pressure on the country`s broader economy.

Against this backdrop, SABCCI called upon the Bangladesh government, relevant ministries, authorities responsible for expatriate welfare and employment, and international stakeholders to work together to address the uncertainty facing Bangladeshi migrant workers.

It emphasised the need for clear communication, appropriate contingency planning and practical support to ensure that workers can join their workplaces safely and on time. The chamber also urged the relevant authorities to consider necessary administrative and financial assistance for workers affected by travel disruptions.

SABCCI said protecting migrant workers should remain a priority during the crisis, particularly because their employment and remittances play a significant role in supporting millions of families and strengthening Bangladesh`s economy.

The chamber expressed confidence that the situation could be resolved through mutual cooperation, effective diplomatic engagement and constructive international dialogue.

It also called on all relevant parties to work towards ensuring the safety, employment and welfare of Bangladeshi expatriates in Saudi Arabia while maintaining the strong bilateral relationship between the two countries.

SABCCI reaffirmed its commitment to promoting trade, investment and economic cooperation between Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia, expressing hope that the longstanding friendship and partnership between the two countries would remain strong despite the prevailing uncertainty.
