Hasina`s ICT case verdict Monday; prosecution seeks max penalty, fresh interpol warrant
  Date : 16-11-2025

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) is set to deliver its verdict in a landmark crimes against humanity case against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and two former top officials on Monday.

It would be the first tribunal case verdict linked to alleged atrocities committed during the July Mass Uprising.

Prosecutors have urged the tribunal to impose the maximum punishment on Hasina, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, who is now an approver after pleading guilty.

They have also sought the confiscation of all properties owned by the accused to compensate families of those killed or injured during the uprising.

Speaking to reporters at the tribunal premises on Sunday, ICT Prosecutor Gazi M H Tamim said the prosecution will file a fresh petition on Monday seeking an Interpol arrest warrant for Hasina after the verdict. “We have sought the highest possible sentence. We also requested that their properties be confiscated and distributed to the families of martyrs and injured victims,” he said, adding that prosecutors will accept any judgment the tribunal issues “in the interest of justice.”

Chief Prosecutor Muhammad Tajul Islam expressed confidence that the tribunal would deliver an exemplary ruling. “The court will exercise its discretion and apply its wisdom. We expect a fair verdict that will set a precedent for the future of Bangladesh,” he said, stressing that no individual—regardless of power or position—should escape accountability for crimes against humanity.

State broadcaster BTV will air the judgment live, with private channels permitted to relay the broadcast.

The case, tried in absentia for Hasina and Kamal, is based on five charges related to killings and abuses allegedly committed under superior command responsibility during the July Mass Uprising.

On June 17, the tribunal issued public notices ordering the two to surrender by June 24, warning that the trial would otherwise continue under Section 10A of the ICT Act. Intelligence reports cited by prosecutors claimed both were in India.

The tribunal set November 17 for the verdict after closing arguments concluded last month. Prosecutors argued for five days, presenting documentary evidence, audio recordings of alleged telephonic conversations, and testimony from 54 witnesses, including relatives of victims and political organisers of the uprising. Defence arguments spanned three days.

Witnesses such as the father of martyr Abu Sayed, NCP Convener Nahid Islam and journalist Mahmudur Rahman testified about what prosecutors described as a “systematic” campaign of violence intended to suppress mass protests.

The tribunal panel, headed by Justice Golam Mortuza Mozumder, framed the charges on July 10 following the formal charge submission on June 1 and the probe report filed on May 12.

Monday’s verdict is expected to be a defining moment for the tribunal and a significant legal milestone in the adjudication of alleged state atrocities committed during the July Uprising.
