Clashes in quota movement: 6 killed in Dhaka, Ctg, Rangpur

Several clashes took place between quota protesters and police, Chhatra League activists in different parts of the country Tuesday in the ongoing movement demanding reform of quota in government jobs.

Clashes are still going on in some places. So far six persons have been reported killed in these clashes.

Among them, three people were killed in Chittagong, two in Dhaka and one in Rangpur. Among the dead, two were students, two were pedestrians and the identity of the other one is yet to be ascertained.

Chittagong: Clashes between Chhatra League and Jubo League started from 3 pm on Tuesday in Muradpur, Sholshahar and surrounding areas in the city. Earlier, the leaders and activists of Chhatra League-Jubo League took positions at various intersections from noon. Three people were killed in the clash.


The dead were Wasim, Faisal Ahmed Shanto and Faruk. Wasim was a student of Chittagong College, hailed from Pekua upazila in ??Cox`s Bazar. Faisal Ahmed Shanto was a student of MES College of the city. The details of the pedestrian Faruk was not known.

Brigadier General Mohammad Taslim Uddin, director of Chittagong Medical College Hospital, confirmed the death of three people.

Rangpur: A student of Begum Rokeya University (BRU) was killed during a clash between police and quota protesters in Rangpur city.

The student`s name is Abu Saeed. He is said to be one of the co-ordinators of the Quota Movement and the student of the English Department`s 2019-20 session.

This incident happened on Tuesday (July 16) around 3 pm. It was also reported that several policemen were injured during the clash.

The deceased Abu Saeed, son of Maqbul Hossain, was a resident of Babanpur under Pirganj Upazila in Rangpur.

Eyewitnesses said that Tuesday at noon the students of the university came out with a procession. They went towards the campus from Lalbagh area of ??the city. They were stopped by police when they tried to enter the campus. At one point, a clash took place between the police and students. Then the police fired rubber bullets at the students. A student was killed in the clash.

Protesters clashed with the police in front of the university in the afternoon. Many were injured in that incident. It was said that the agitators are returning to their campus with the body of the dead from Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
