NIA raids in Tamil Nadu spark outcry over targeting of Muslims amid growing intimidation
  Date : 22-10-2024

Online Desk: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Tuesday raided more than ten locations across Tamil Nadu linked to suspects of the banned organisation Hizb ut-Tahrir.The raids have sparked concern among community members, with critics alleging that the actions serve as a means to target and intimidate the Muslim community. Naeem, a social activist, expressed his discontent, stating, “No such organisation exists in India. Whatever the Muslims do, they do it responsibly. Every day, something new is attempted to scare society. This type of behaviour towards Muslims should stop.”The crackdown follows a case registered by the Chennai Central Crime Branch, which involves allegations of brainwashing individuals to recruit them into the group. The NIA’s involvement comes after the investigation task was taken away from local authorities. According to reports, the case centres around three individuals, including a father and son from Roya Peeta, who are accused of persuading others to join Hizb ut-Tahrir.Since early morning, NIA officials have conducted searches in various areas, including Tambaram, Pudukottai, and Kanyakumari. As of now, no arrests have been confirmed, nor have any incriminating documents been recovered during the raids. However, the NIA has detained five people in connection with the case, who are currently undergoing interrogation. An NIA official stated, “We are actively searching for those who are in contact with the suspects, as well as gathering more evidence on their activities.”
