In a brazen daylight robbery, a group of muggers impersonating Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) officers looted Tk 1.8 crore from employees of a distributor of mobile financial service Nagad in Dhaka’s Uttara area on Saturday morning, June 14, 2025.
According to police and witness accounts, Abdul Khalek Noyon, a Nagad distributor based in a flat on Road 12, Uttara Sector 13, sent four employees to their nearby distribution office around 9:00am.
The team, traveling on two motorcycles, was carrying bags containing Tk 1.8 crore in cash intended for a bank deposit.
As they entered Road 13, a black microbus intercepted them. Three to four men, dressed in RAB jackets, emerged from the vehicle, chased down the motorcyclists, and forcibly dragged three employees into the microbus along with the cash bags. One employee managed to escape.
CCTV footage obtained from the scene shows the microbus blocking the motorcycles, with the assailants, wearing RAB uniforms, pursuing and apprehending the victims. The muggers later released the employees in Uttara’s Sector 17 and fled with the money.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Uttara Division, Md Mohidul Islam, confirmed the incident to Jago News. “I personally visited the scene shortly after the robbery,” he said.
“We’ve collected CCTV footage and are analysing it to identify the perpetrators.”
He noted that the police are treating the case with high priority, suspecting the use of RAB uniforms was a deliberate tactic to intimidate the victims and evade suspicion.
One of the victims, a Nagad representative, recounted the ordeal, stating that the group was stopped by men claiming to be RAB officers. “They took us into their microbus with the bag of money and later abandoned us in Sector 17 after seizing the cash,” he said.
Law enforcement officials believe the impersonation of RAB personnel was a calculated move to exploit the authority associated with the elite force.
An investigation is underway to track down the culprits and recover the stolen funds. Police are also examining whether the heist involved insider information, given its precision and timing.
