Barcelona fought back from two goals down to seal a dramatic 3-2 win over newly-promoted Levante on Saturday, while Atletico Madrid were again left frustrated after drawing 1-1 with Elche.
Hansi Flick`s side looked in trouble early on in Valencia, as Ivan Romero and 38-year-old Jose Luis Morales struck in the first half to give Levante a surprise lead. Romero opened the scoring with a clever turn and finish, before Morales converted a penalty awarded after a VAR review judged Alejandro Balde to have handled the ball.
Barcelona responded strongly after the break. Pedri kickstarted the comeback with a stunning 25-yard strike just four minutes into the second half, and Ferran Torres quickly followed with a close-range equaliser from a corner.
Despite several missed chances and a waterlogged pitch, Barcelona found the winner in stoppage time when Unai Elgezabal headed into his own net under pressure from Torres, securing a second straight win for the reigning champions.
“They made it very difficult for us, we have to improve a lot,” Flick admitted after the game.
Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid remain winless after two games. Diego Simeone`s side once again took the lead—this time through Alexander Sorloth’s early goal—but were pegged back as Rafa Mir equalised for Elche just minutes later.
Atletico created several opportunities, with Giuliano Simeone hitting the post and Marcos Llorente narrowly missing late on. Conor Gallagher also saw a long-range effort go wide after intercepting a poor clearance. Simeone himself was booked in stoppage time for protesting a penalty not given in the dying moments.
“There was improvement from the Espanyol match, but the result is not there,” Simeone said. “We need to work, be patient.”
Elsewhere, Mallorca and Celta Vigo played out a 1-1 draw, with Mateu Morey netting a late equaliser to cancel out Javi Rueda’s opener.
