Matheus Cunha has been withdrawn from Brazil’s squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Bolivia after picking up a muscle injury during Manchester United’s 3-2 Premier League win over Burnley on Saturday.
The Brazilian football federation confirmed the 26-year-old forward’s exclusion, stating: “Following discussions between the medical departments of Manchester United and the national team, striker Matheus Cunha has been ruled out due to a muscle injury sustained in the Premier League match against Burnley.”
Cunha, who joined United from Wolves this summer, was substituted in the 28th minute of the match at Old Trafford.
Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti has called up Flamengo winger Samuel Lino as Cunha’s replacement. Lino returned to Brazil from Atletico Madrid in July.
Cunha is the fourth player from Ancelotti’s original squad to be sidelined by injury, joining Joelinton (Newcastle), Alex Sandro (Flamengo), and Vanderson (Monaco).
Brazil, currently third in the 10-team South American qualifying group, have already secured a place at the 2026 World Cup. They will face Chile—already eliminated—at the Maracana on September 4, followed by a challenging away trip to high-altitude El Alto to take on Bolivia on September 9.
