Govt solely liable for unilateral reform moves: Fakhrul
  Date : 11-11-2025

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday warned that the government will have to bear full responsibility if it attempts to impose any reforms beyond the consensus reached among political stakeholders.

“Regarding some reforms, we have reached a consensus, but if anything is forcibly imposed beyond that, the government alone will have to take full responsibility,” Fakhrul said while addressing a meeting at Kismat Keshur Bari Laxmirhat High School ground in Borgaon union of Thakurgaon Sadar upazila.

Touching on the upcoming national election, Fakhrul cautioned that Bangladesh risks becoming a “failed state” if the polls are postponed, stressing the importance of holding the election on time to maintain democratic continuity.

He also criticised a certain political party for allegedly spreading “distorted religious messages” among women at the grassroots level, urging citizens to stay alert against “those who use religion for political gain.”

The BNP leader also stated that Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami is in fear of upcoming elections because they know their political existence will come to an end if people are allowed to cast their vote freely.

He said, “Jamaat says nothing will happen unless their terms are accepted. Why are you so afraid of elections? Because you know that if voting takes place, your existence will be erased.”

Fakhrul pledged that if BNP is reelected, the party will create one million new jobs within 15 months, alongside ensuring a fully independent judiciary to restore public confidence in the justice system.

Fakhrul also criticized Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP), claiming that despite having no presence in the area, the group aligns with Jamaat for publicity purposes. “They want Proportional Representation (PR), but people don’t care about that. This is just a tactic to mislead the public,” he remarked.

On education sector reforms, he opposed the recent decision to abolish the posts of physical education and music teachers from schools, saying it creates a serious imbalance in the country’s education system.
