Bangladesh`s seaports in the face of climate change challenges: Progressing with potential despite risks
  Date : 15-01-2026

Saiful Islam: The impact of climate change is forcing coastal regions and seaports around the world to rethink. Frequent cyclones, tidal waves, rising sea levels and the spread of salinity are also putting Bangladesh`s seaports at risk. However, keeping this reality in mind, the country`s seaports are now moving forward on the path of sustainable development while addressing risks.

The seaports of Chittagong, Mongla and Payra are the main gateways to international trade in Bangladesh. Despite the effects of climate change, long-term plans have been taken to keep these port activities running and prepare for the future. As a result, the capacity and importance of the ports are becoming more visible even in adverse environments.
Disaster Risk and Reality:
Due to their location around the Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh`s seaports are more susceptible to natural disasters. There is a risk of ship movement, cargo unloading and infrastructure damage during cyclones and tidal waves. At the same time, rising sea levels are putting pressure on the port`s jetties, yards and connection roads.
Progress towards sustainable infrastructure:
To address this challenge, emphasis is being placed on disaster-resistant infrastructure, improved drainage systems and strong protective embankments. The foundation for long-term safe port management is being laid through modern jetty and terminal planning. In addition, changes are being made in the infrastructure design by considering environmental impacts.
Technology-based port management:
As digital monitoring systems, integrated port management with weather forecasting and the smart port concept are effective, it is becoming easier to identify risks in advance. This increases safety in shipping and cargo transportation and creates the possibility of reducing damage during disasters.
Environmentally friendly initiatives and green port concept:
To reduce carbon emissions, there is a growing trend towards the use of renewable energy, energy-efficient equipment and environmentally friendly methods in waste management. In this, seaports are gradually transforming into environmentally friendly and international standard green ports.
Role in economy and regional trade:
Despite all kinds of risks, seaports continue to play an important role as the main driving force of the country`s economic growth. As import-export activities continue, the supply system at the industrial, agricultural and consumer levels remains stable. As a result, Bangladesh`s capacity and acceptance in international trade is increasing.
Optimistic future:
According to experts, sustainable planning and modern management, keeping in mind the risks of climate change, will make Bangladesh`s seaports stronger in the future. This progress in finding opportunities amidst risks proves that Bangladesh`s seaports are not only facing challenges, but are also moving towards new horizons of development.
