  Date : 27-04-2026

BSS) - Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon today said the incumbent government is committed to ensuring media freedom.

At the same time, he said, it is equally important to protect people from the risks of misinformation and disinformation.

The minister made the remarks when US Ambassador in Dhaka Brent T. Christensen paid a courtesy call on him at his office in the morning.

During the meeting, they discussed strengthening mutual relations and increasing media, cultural and knowledge-based cooperation between the two countries.

Swapon emphasised bringing digital platforms under a system of rules and regulations in the current technology-dependent world.

He said all countries of the world must work together to prevent misuse of digital platforms.

The information minister stressed the need for ensuring transparency and accountability along with freedom of the press.

Swapon informed the US envoy that the government is holding regular meetings with various media stakeholders.

An effective action plan or roadmap will be prepared after reviewing the proposals received from these meetings, he said.

In this regard, he sought technical and professional cooperation from the US.

During the meeting, the US Ambassador said the US regularly provides scholarships in various specialised categories to enhance the skills of Bangladeshi students and professionals.

He commented that the young people and professionals of Bangladesh can benefit from this.

The information minister raised the issue of the recent tragic murder of two Bangladeshi students in Florida, USA, and expressed hope that a fair trial would be held.

The US Embassy delegation informed the Bangladesh information minister that the accused in that incident has already been arrested.

Senior officials of the US Embassy were present at the meeting.
