DU Correspondent: Strengthening international cooperation on environmental protection and climate action, the Embassy of Sweden in Bangladesh and the University of Dhaka (DU) have reaffirmed their commitment to deeper collaboration, with a strong focus on youth engagement and public participation.
First Secretary (Environment and Climate Change) of the Swedish Embassy, Nayoka Martinez Backström, met with DU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. A. B. M. Obaidul Islam at the VC’s office on Wednesday. The meeting underscored the importance of raising awareness about environmental and climate issues, particularly among young people, and promoting inclusive policy-making processes.
Both sides highlighted the need to empower youth as key stakeholders in addressing climate challenges. They stressed that meaningful engagement of students and civil society can play a vital role in shaping sustainable solutions and influencing environmental policies.
During the discussion, it was noted that a number of public consultations have already been successfully conducted with the support of international partners, including the European Union, Sweden, and Germany. These initiatives have facilitated active youth participation and helped present complex environmental issues in a simplified and accessible manner for the general public.
The meeting also shed light on an upcoming joint program expected to bring together around 250 students and civil society representatives. The University of Dhaka is anticipated to play a central role in organizing and hosting the event in collaboration with international stakeholders.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Islam assured full institutional support for such initiatives, emphasizing that universities have a critical responsibility in tackling climate change. He reiterated DU’s commitment to fostering responsible citizenship and equipping students to contribute effectively to environmental sustainability.
The engagement marks a continued effort to build partnerships that not only enhance awareness but also drive collective action in addressing one of the most pressing global challenges of our time.
