A high-level day-long “China-Bangladesh Roundtable on Governance Experience” began in Dhaka on Friday morning with the aim of strengthening governance cooperation, development exchanges, and strategic partnership between Bangladesh and China.

The roundtable, held at the InterContinental Hotel in the capital, has been jointly organised by the Center for China Studies and the Shanghai Institutes for International Studies (SIIS) in collaboration with the University of Dhaka.

The opening session was moderated by Major General A.S.M. Redwanur Rahman. Among the speakers were Bangladesh Education Minister Dr. A.N.M. Ehsanul Haque Milon, State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam, Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen, SIIS President Chen Dongxiao, and Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor A.B.M. Obaidul Islam.

Addressing the event, the Education Minister said that amid growing global uncertainty, stronger cooperation between Bangladesh and China in development, security, and governance could open new opportunities for both countries.

Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen stated that China would continue extending full support to Bangladesh in areas such as political stability, economic growth, and public welfare.

SIIS President Chen Dongxiao emphasized that improving people’s living standards and ensuring sustainable development should remain the core objective of bilateral cooperation. He noted that development and security are deeply interconnected and that sustainable development must reinforce security while strong security frameworks should support development efforts.

He also announced plans for future joint roundtable discussions on artificial intelligence and digital governance, urban development and transport management, river management, agricultural modernization, marine economy, and disaster prevention and mitigation.

The seminar features discussions across three major sessions focusing on the current international situation and the economic impact of Middle East instability, artificial intelligence and technological cooperation among Global South countries, and the application of Chinese experience in river management and urban transportation.

Researchers and experts from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), and China’s Tongji and Yunnan universities are participating in the discussions.

The roundtable is scheduled to conclude with a closing session at 4:30 p.m.
