Lightning strikes kill 7 across 5 districts

Seven people were killed by lightning strikes across five districts in the country on Wednesday as sudden thundershowers swept through the country.

Most of the victims were farmers and laborers who were harvesting crops in open fields at the time of the incidents.

In Naogaon district, the highest number of casualties were reported where three people lost their lives. At Mahadevpur upazila, a farmer named Dilip Chandra Barman was struck while harvesting paddy and was later declared dead at a local hospital.

At Niamatpur upazila, Anukul Chandra Mahanta died instantly while transporting harvested crops. Another unidentified laborer from Chapainawabganj also died while working in the fields at the same upazila.

In Mymensingh district’s Nandail upazila, 55-year-old farmer Abdur Rashid was killed. According to local residents, he was working in a paddy field when a sudden bolt of lightning struck near him, causing him to collapse. He was declared dead upon arrival at Nandail Upazila Health Complex.

In Lalmonirhat district a farmer named Yusuf Ali, 40, died at Kaliganj upazila. He went to his maize field to secure his crops, where he was struck by a fatal bolt of lightning.

In Kurigram’s Nageshwari upazila, a farmer named Obaidul Islam was killed while harvesting paddy. Local police confirmed that he collapsed in the field during the storm and was later declared dead by hospital authorities.

In Jamalpur district’s Dewanganj upazila, a 30-year-old man named Sohail Mia died while working in a maize field. His family members stated that he had gone to the field in the morning and was caught in the afternoon storm.

Local authorities and police officials in the respective districts have confirmed the deaths and stated that legal procedures for handing over the bodies to the families are underway.
