2 more die with measles symptoms in Rajshahi, Mymensingh

Two more children have died with measles-like symptoms in Rajshahi and Mymensingh districts during the past 24 hours, hospital authorities said on Tuesday morning.

In Rajshahi, one child died in the pediatric ward of Medical College Hospital (RMCH), said hospital spokesperson Dr Shankar K Biswas.

He said eight new children with measles-like symptoms were admitted during the same period, while 18 others recovered and were discharged after treatment.

At present, 112 children with suspected measles are receiving treatment in the pediatric unit of RMCH. Hospital data show that 926 children have been admitted so far with similar symptoms, while 54 deaths have been reported.

Shankar added that although no deaths were reported in the previous week, new admissions continue, indicating ongoing concern over the outbreak.

Meanwhile, in Mymensingh, another child died at the isolation ward of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH), bringing the total number of suspected measles deaths at the facility to 25.

In the last 24 hours, 19 new children with measles-like symptoms were admitted, raising the number of currently hospitalized patients to 79.

According to hospital sources, a seven-month-old girl from Madhupur in Tangail was admitted to MMCH on April 30 and died on Monday, May 4, while undergoing treatment with complications including pneumonia and heart failure.

Associate Professor Dr Md Golam Mawla, focal person of the hospital’s measles medical team, confirmed the information on Tuesday morning.

He said that since March 17, a total of 1,088 children with suspected measles symptoms have been admitted to MMCH, while 984 have recovered and been discharged.

During the last 24 hours, 21 children recovered and left the hospital.
