  Date : 22-05-2026

A Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) member was stabbed to death by a suspected mugger in Sylhet city on Friday, police said.

The incident took place around 12:00pm in Kin Bridge area under Kotwali Police Station.

The suspect was later arrested along with the knife believed to have been used in the attack.

The deceased was identified as Imon Acharya, a member of RAB.

According to police, a team from the police station was chasing the suspected mugger in the area when the suspect attempted to flee. Imon Acharya, who was nearby, managed to catch the suspect during the pursuit.

At that moment, the suspect allegedly stabbed him on the left side of his chest before fleeing the scene, leaving him critically injured.

Sylhet Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (North) Md Saiful Islam said the RAB member intervened after noticing police chasing the suspect.

“As soon as he caught the mugger, the attacker stabbed him on the left side of the chest,” the police official said.

Police later launched an operation and arrested the suspect. The knife used in the attack was also recovered, officials said.

Additional Superintendent of Police of RAB-9, KM Shahidul Islam Sohag, said Imon Acharya died while undergoing treatment due to excessive bleeding caused by the stab wound.
