MM Rahmatullah: Remarks made by India’s newly appointed High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, upon his arrival in the country have sparked widespread discussion and criticism across social media and among political observers, reigniting debate over Bangladesh-India relations, regional politics, and issues of national sovereignty.

Speaking to journalists after entering Bangladesh through the Benapole-Petrapole land port, Trivedi emphasized the close ties between the two neighboring countries. Referring to the populations of India and Bangladesh, he stated, “We have a population of 1.4 billion. If we add Bangladesh’s 200 million, it becomes 1.6 billion. What I want to do here will be done together. I am not thinking separately. You can see that I walked across. We share the same sky and the same air.”

The comments quickly drew attention, generating mixed reactions. While some viewed the statement as a reflection of the deep historical, geographical, and cultural bonds between the two countries, critics interpreted it as an uncomfortable message that could be perceived as suggesting a dominant attitude toward Bangladesh.
