International: China has strongly opposed the U.S. Department of Defense`s decision to place several Chinese research institutions on its sanctions list, describing the move as unjustified and harmful to international scientific cooperation. The remarks were made by a spokesperson for China`s Ministry of Commerce during a regular press briefing in Beijing on Tuesday.
Responding to media inquiries, the spokesperson accused the United States of repeatedly overstretching the concept of national security and imposing discriminatory restrictions. According to the spokesperson, Washington has been politicizing scientific research cooperation and using it as a political, military and strategic tool, undermining collaboration between Chinese and American researchers.
The spokesperson said the U.S. actions have disrupted bilateral scientific exchanges and run counter to the global trend of strengthening cooperation in science, technology and innovation.
China urged the United States to stop what it called baseless allegations against Chinese research institutions, promptly correct its "wrongful practices," and ensure fair and non-discriminatory treatment of Chinese scientific organizations.
The spokesperson added that China will take all necessary measures to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of its research institutions while continuing to promote normal international cooperation in science and technology.
